Hamilton Rifle Club Results

14/2 to 7/3/15

It would be good to report that some excellent scores have been recorded over the last few weeks but sadly that is not the case. Conditions have been very difficult with winds that have been very difficult to read and either high temperatures and mirage or heavy cloud and varying light.

Hamilton Rifle Club Results

7/2/15

The shoot on Saturday was held over 500 and 600 yards in conditions that were very benign at times and challenging at others. If the shooter shot under heavy cloud cover, then temperatures were down, sighting was clear and the wind was readable but when the sun came out, the temperature soared, mirage kicked in and the wind twitched back and forth.

It was good to see Roger and Bill from Portland join us and also 2 new shooters, Ben and Tom.

Roger Teal led the way at 500 yards in F Open with a 59.4, followed by Danny Sandford in F Standard with a 57.3, followed by Rod Duncan 54.1, Bill 50.1, Tom (HC) 48.2, Shaun Haines 48, and Russell Murphy 43. In Target Rifle, it was Bernie Warren on 47.2 ahead of Ken Pickett on 45.1. Ben, using an open sighted Mosin Nagant did well shooting a 36.

At 600 yards, Roger Teal finished well with a 58.3 in F Open. Rod Duncan led the way in F Standard with 56.1, followed by Danny Sandford 51.4, Russell Murphy 51.3, Bill 51.1, Shaun Haines 46, Tom (HC)44, and Ben 20. Ken Pickett was the sole shooter in Target Rifle with a 41.1.

Hamilton Rifle Club Results

The Hamilton Rifle Range has a long and well deserved reputation as being one of the most difficult ranges in Victoria and this past month it has lived up to that reputation with strong winds that gust and change direction frequently accounting for some lower than average scores.

Hamilton Rifle Club Results

10/1/2015

The Hamilton Rifle Club held their first shoot for 2015 on Saturday, numbers were down a bit with some members being still on holidays. Conditions were fairly good, the lower temperature provided a clear sight picture and the breeze stayed from the one direction, although it varied in strength at times.

It was good to welcome Dave Hillier back. Although he is still recovering and unable to shoot yet, he assisted by helping with the scoring which was greatly appreciated.

It was also good to welcome 4 prospective new members, Tony and 3 of his boys, Tom, Michael and Jim. The boys all had a shot with Michael having a narrow lead 55.2 to Jim on 54.3 and Tom not far behind.

At 400 yards, Bernie Warren, shooting in Target Rifle, scored a 46.1 to hold the lead from Greg Gunn on 45.2, whilst in F Standard, Ben Andrews top scored with 57.6 followed by Danny Sandford 57.4, Steve Ludvig 54.2 and Rod Duncan on 46.

As usual the longer ranges determine the final placings and 600 yards was no exception. In Target Rifle, Greg Gunn shot a 47.1 to finish ahead of Bernie Warren on 44.2 and in F Class Standard, Danny Sandford shot a 59.4 followed by Steve Ludvig 58.3, Ben Andrews 52 and Rod Duncan 51.2.

The Hamilton Rifle Club held their Xmas shoot on Saturday consisting of a centrefire match at 300 yards and a rimfire match at 200 yards. The wind chopped and changed in strength and direction, swinging from a westerly to a northerly and back catching a few shooters by surprise at times.

The 300 yard shoot consisted of 10 scoring shots in a snap event, a small target is held up for 3 seconds at a time at varying positions, so the shooter has to get their shot away quickly, reload and be ready for the next target. Scoring was 10 points for a centre bull, 5 points for a bull and 2 points for the rest of the target.

Danny Sandford was successful in shooting a perfect score of 100, followed by Arnold Kelly 90, Michael Davies 75, Lee Kelly 75, Jayden Duncan 71, Rod Duncan 70, Grant Hornell 62, Steve Ludvig 55, Ken Pickett 49,Rob Kelly 36 and Shaun Haines 14.

The 5th and final round of the 10 Ring Target Championship was held at the Hamilton Rifle Club on Saturday. Conditions were reasonably good, with a bit of mirage to held indicate the wind direction when the flags failed to do so. The breeze was very light, for most of the time it would blow from the left but then die, swing around and blow gently from the right, just enough to moved the bullet up to an inch or so either side of the 10 ring or bullseye.

With all shots to be fired at 300 yards, it was decided to pit up the marquee and provide shade for the competitors which was greatly appreciated.

Scores in F Class were, Danny Sandford 99, 97 (196), Arnold Kelly 95,96 (191), Grant Hornell 94,96 (190), Greg Gunn 94,92 (186), Sean Haines 86,87 (173) and Ken Pickett 75,82 (157).

Scores in Hunter Class were, Ray Broadbent 87, 86 (173) and Will Broadbent 73,85 (158).

Winner of the F Class championship was Danny Sandford with 4 out of 5 wins and in Hunter Class it was Ray Broadbent with 3 out of 5 wins.

Next with is the McDougal Cup with teams from Mt Gambier, Casterton and Hamilton competing at Hamilton starting at 10 am.

A very strong gusty wind greeted shooters at the Hamilton Rifle Range on Saturday. Discussion was held as to whether we could even use the 800 yard targets as the wind put so much pressure on them making raising and lowering difficult, but with 2 markers to a target we went ahead.

The first few shooters seemed to cop the worst of the conditions but as the afternoon progressed the wind eased a little and scores increased, marking also became easier and quicker.

At the first 800 yards, Rod Duncan held the lead in F Standard with a 50.3, followed by Grant Hornell 50.1, Steve Ludvig 50, Arnold Kelly 46.1, Sean Haines 45.2 and Jayden Duncan 45. In F Open Danny Sandford had a 47 .

At the next 800 scores increased slightly, Arnold and Rod were both on 54.3, Steve 54, Grant 53.1, Jayden 52.1, Sean 25 and Danny 53.

Aggregate scores were Rod 104.6, Steve 104, Grant 103, Arnold 100.4, Danny 100, Jayden 97.1 and Sean in his first ever centrefire shoot 70.2.

Winner on handicap was Grant Hornell.

With dark clouds and a thunder storm approaching it was a matter of getting stuck into the afternoons program and shooting quickly.

At 400 yards with fairly heavy mirage scores were fairly consistent. With Grant Hornell and Bernie Warren shooting in F Standard, it was Grant in the lead with a 52.2 with Bernie on 49.2. Danny Sandford held a slight lead using his 6mm Dasher from Steve Ludwig using a 6BR in F Open, 54.4 to 53 , and in TR, Angus Gardner got up with a 46.3.

Back at 600 yards and with the thunder storm approaching quickly, the temperature dropped, the mirage disappeared and the wind couldn’t decide what to do. Bernie decided to save time, retired from shooting and did an excellent job manning the butts.

Angus was first shooter down and it looked like he had a handle on the conditions, with 2 Vs for his first and second scoring shots but then he fell out of sync and finished with a 41.2. Danny was second down and it appeared that he got Danny conditions as he only dropped his 8th shot getting up with a 59.4. Steve was next to tackle the conditions, dropping a couple of points early but then he found form until his last two shots finishing on 56.2. Grant was the last shooter down finishing well with 2 supercenters for a score of 56.4.

Aggregate scores were, Danny 113.8, Steve 109.2, Grant 108.6 and Angus 87.5.

5 Clients from STAY Residential Services (Providing support for people with disabilities) visited the Hamilton Rifle Club on Saturday morning, this visit was their first to our club and they were very excited. Due to very wet and windy conditions the shoot was moved from the 50 metre outdoor range to the indoor 20 metre range. After a bit of an explanation of safety rules etc the first 2 shooters rather nervously took their places at the shooting benches, however guided by Rifle Club members they soon had their first shots on paper and smiles on their faces. Each shooter had ten shots with some very good groups being recorded, then they all had another go and another go and in some cases another go. In the end it was the smell of onions and sausages that call a halt to the shooting. I am sure it won’t be their last visit.

Conditions for the afternoon shoot at 500 yards were going to be interesting with a howling wind and occasional rain squalls. With the wind coming from between 1 and 2 oclock a lot of pressure was put on the target frames which necessitated using 2 markers per target. The flag pole at 200 yards now has a big bend in it.

At the first 500 yards, Danny Sandford was the first shooter down and it looks like he got some of the better conditions, if there were any, getting up with a 59.5 in F Standard after dropping his first shot. Steve Ludwig was not far behind with a 57.4 in F Open. In Target Rifle Greg Gunn scored a 43.1. Ken Pickett managed a 48.1 and Craig Steele a 40 both in F Standard.

The second 500 and wind was still blowing hard with anywhere from 3 to 8 minutes of wind being required and this was with a ¼ to ½ strength wind due to the angle.

Most scores dropped, Steve Ludwig got up with a 53.1, Greg Gunn put a scope on his rifle instead of peep sights and shot a 53, but was counted out by Danny Sandford also on 53 but finishing with a pair of 6s. Craig Steele improved scoring a 46.1 ahead of Ken Pickett 45.

Aggregate scores, Danny Sandford 112.5, Steve Ludwig 110.5, Ken Pickett 103.1, Greg Gunn 96.1 and Craig Steele 86.1.

Winner on Handicap was Ken Pickett.

Next Friday afternoon is a working bee followed by our Prize Meeting on the Saturday.

6 Hamilton Rifle Club members attended the annual Horsham Prize Meeting held over 2 days on the weekend. Four ranges were shot on Saturday followed by 3 ranges on Sunday. With rifle shooters travelling from all over the State and Interstate, everyone knew that the competition would be tight. On Saturday, there was just the slightest breeze which if not read correctly would take the shot just out of the bulls eye but the mirage was quite strong, making sighting difficult.

At the end of Day 1, Hamilton Rifle Club members were well placed in their respective grades. Greg Gunn was sitting in 3rd place in Target Rifle C Grade. In F Class Standard A Grade, Danny Sandford was in 3rd place with Steve Ludwig in 4th place and Grant Hornell 7th, whilst in F Standard B Grade, Dave Hillier was 4th ahead of Rod Duncan in 5th place.

Dave Hillier also top scored at 4oo yards in B Grade with a very good 58.06.

Day 2 and the mirage had disappeared so sighting was clear but the wind could be quite nasty at times as it dropped off very quickly. Greg Gunn top scored at 700 yards in Target Rifle C Grade and Steve Ludwig in F Standard at 600 yards.

In the 2nd day aggregate, Greg Gunn again placed 3rd in his grade, with Danny Sandford 3rd , Steve Ludwig 5th and Grant Hornell 7th in F Standard A grade. Rod Duncan was 4th and Dave Hillier 5th in B grade.

Grand aggregate placings saw Greg Gunn picking up the 3rd place badge in C grade , Danny Sandford the 3rd place badge in F A grade and Rod Duncan 4th badge in F B.

Whilst not winning a badge the other Hamilton shooters still finished in good positions, with Steve Ludwig 5th, Grant Hornell 7th in FA and Dave Hillier 5 in FB.

Due to the Hamilton Smallbore prize meeting being held next weekend, Hamilton Rifle Club members are shooting at Portland.

Given what appeared to be great conditions, scores could have been expected to be higher over the 600 & 700 yards that were contested on Saturday, however, with a bit of sun and a very wet range, the mirage caused sighting difficulties, but also gave an indication of wind speed that the wind flags failed to show at times.

At 600 yards, Ken Pickett, in Target Rifle held the lead with a 45.2 out of 50 from Greg Gunn on 41.1. Whilst in F Open, Nick Economou, with a 52.4 was just ahead of Steve Ludwig on 52.3. Round 3 of the Les Kelly Memorial Feral Animal Championship was shot at the Hamilton Rifle Club on Saturday in what would have to be described as perfect conditions, sighting was clear and there was only the slightest breeze coming from the left. It was more about having an accurate rifle and pulling good shots rather than picking the conditions, therefore scores were quite high.

The competition was held this week over 400 & 500 yards, conditions were good with a cool breeze blowing from the right hand side of the range, varying just enough in strength and direction to take shots out of the 6 ring. The lower temperature also accounted for a reduction in the amount of mirage and therefore a clear target image enabling shooters to make the most of their high powered scopes. Scores are out of a maximum possible of 60.10.

At 400 yards the scores were generally lower than expected given the conditions, F Standard was very close with Grant Hornell narrowly holding the lead with a 53.3 followed by Dave Hillier 53.2, Arnold Kelly 53.1, Roger Teal 53.1, Dave Molloy 52.2, Steve Ludwig 50 and Greg Gunn 33 due to an equipment issue. Conditions were very pleasant for the shoot with mild temperatures and a light to medium breeze blowing from the left hand side of the range. It was changing just enough to make shooters have to work to get a good score and that combined with a mirage which made sighting difficult accounted for some lost points. At 600 yards, Danny Sandford held a narrow lead with a 56.3 ahead of Arnold Kelly 55.3, Michael Davies 54.2, Grant Hornell 54.1, Greg Gunn 53.1, Nic Economou 51, Dave Hillier 50 and Bernie Warren 45.2.

Round 2 of the Les Kelly Memorial Feral Animal Championship was held this weekend, shot over 300 yards, first at a feral cat target then at a pig target. The wind was very gentle most of the time, changing just enough to move the shot out of the 10 ring if the shooter missed the change. Sighting was more of an issue as the mirage was fairly thick causing the target image to dance around.

Ray Broadbent set the pace in Hunter Class scoring a 93 on the cat target, well ahead of the rest of the field. Craig Steel followed with a 84 and Will Broadbent made it into 3rd place with a 67.

In F Class, scores were a lot closer, Danny Sandford was just ahead with a 100, Grant Hornell 2nd on 99 and Steve Ludwig 3rd on 97.

The pig targets saw a pick up in the Hunter Class scores with Ray Broadbent and Craig Steel both on 94 and Hamish Little and Will Broadbent both on 92.

Grant Hornell and Danny Sandford tied for 1st, both with 99’s in F class, with Marcus Little and Steve Ludwig also tied with 96’s.

Aggregate scores in Hunter Class were Ray Broadbent 1st with a 187, Craig Steel 178 and Will Broadbent 3rd on 159.

In F Class, Danny Sandford finished on 199, Grant Hornell 198 and Steve Ludwig 3rd on 193.

The shoot next week is planned for 800 & 900 yards, however, with a number of members heading to Bendigo for the State Titles the Hamilton shoot maybe varied.

Tricky conditions greeted shooters at the Hamilton Rifle Range on Saturday, with the wind predominately coming in from the left, however, at times it would blow straight down the range and occasionally swing around to the right, all the time varying in strength. At 600 yards Bernie Warren shot very well to score a 49.3 in Target Rifle, just ahead of Greg Gunn on 47.2. This week all scoped rifle shooters were competing in F Standard ie all using .308s and all using the same weight projectiles. Last week the club competed in the VRA Medal & Spoon competition for the first time in quite  a few years. The event has to be shot on a clubs home range between July and October with 7 scoring shots at 300, 500 & 600 yards. In order to win a VRA medal or spoon competitors have to shoot a qualifying score which is always hard at Hamilton given the strong winds and openness of the range. 3 shooters won their first VRA medal, Grant Hornell in F Open,  Steve Ludwig in F Standard and Greg Gunn in Target Rifle.

This week, the shoot was supposed to be over 400 & 700 yards but was changed to a double 700 due to the amount of water at 400 yards. Conditions were trying at times as the wind varied in strength. At the first 700,  Grant Hornell scored a 55 in F Open and in Target Rifle Arnold Kelly shot a 47.             F Standard saw Danny Sandford on 56, ahead of Ben Andrews on 49 and Wendy Ridding on 46.

At the second 700 yards, shooters were starting to read the conditions better, Grant Hornell shot very well in F Open, scoring a 59.1. Arnold Kelly in Target Rifle missed a couple of changes to get up with a 46, whilst in F Standard, Danny Sandford again scored a 56, ahead of Bernie Warren on 54 and Wendy Ridding 3rd with a 51.

Aggregate scores were, F Open, Grant Hornell 114.1. Target Rifle, Arnold Kelly 90.2.  F Class Standard, Danny Sandford 112, Bernie Warren 101.1, Wendy Ridding 97 on a countback from Ben Andrews also on 97.

Due to a change in the programme the shoot next week will be the 2nd to last Ten Ring Target competition for 2013, shot over 200 and 300 yards.

Two ten shot matches were held over 600 & 700 yards with a fluctuating breeze blowing from the right hand side of the range. At 600 yards, shooters had to adjust their sights to allow for about 24 inches of wind drive. With the 6 ring being 5.7 inches in diameter, it doesn’t take much of a change in the wind to drop scores.

Arnold Kelly picked the conditions well, top scoring at 600 yards with a 57.3, ahead of Rod Duncan on 55, Danny Sandford 53.3, Dave Hillier 53, Bernie Warren 52.4, Michael Davies 50.1, Wendy Ridding 49.1, Jayden Duncan 49, Ken Pickett 47.1 and Steve Ludwig 46.1.

At 700 yards, a combination of a slightly weaker wind and a bit of shelter for the first 100 yards, resulted in a little less allowance needed on the rifle scopes. Danny Sandford improved on his first range, picking up a 57.2, followed by Bernie Warren 56.1 , Rod Duncan 54.3, Arnold Kelly 54.3, Dave Hillier 54.2, Ken Pickett 54, Michael Davies 51.1, Wendy Ridding 51, Steve Ludwig 49 and Jayden Duncan 48.

Aggregate scores were, A Kelly 111.6, D Sandford 110.4, R Duncan 109.3, B Warren 108.5, D Hillier 107.2, M Davies 101.2, K Pickett 101.2, W Ridding 100.1, J Duncan 97 and S Ludwig 95.2.

Round 1 of the Les Kelly Memorial Feral Animal Competition was shot this weekend with a strong field keeping competition keen. The shoot consisted of a 10 shot match at 200 yards on the rabbit target followed by a 10 shot match at 300 yards on the feral cat target. The wind, which was fairly strong at times accounted for a number of shooters having some wide shots whilst the mirage made sighting a bit harder.

At 200 yards, in Hunter Class, only 2 points separated the top 3 shooters with Ray Broadbent leading the way with a 93 followed very closely by Katherine Broadbent on 92 and Wendy Ridding on 91.

In F Class, things were even tighter, with Danny Sandford ahead on 98, followed by Rod Duncan, Greg Gunn and Grant Hornell, all on 97 .

300 yards and the competition started to spread out a bit. Due to the extra distance some shooters in Hunter Class elected to watch out the proceedings but Ray Broadbent, showed them how to do it scoring a very good 95. Wendy Ridding should have had a 96 but dropped 10 points in one shot when she just missed the target, causing her to finnish on 86.

F class saw Danny Sandford again scoring a 98, ahead of Arnold Kelly on 94 and Grant Hornell on 90.

Aggregate scores were , Hunter Class, Ray Broadbent 188, Wendy Ridding 177.

The first shoot for 2013 was held over 300 yards in pleasant but windy conditions. There was a small amount of mirage which was readable and did not effect sighting. The wind coming from the left was fairly steady but would change direction and catch the unwary.

It was good to see some new faces, with Wendy Ridding and Dougal Christie, shooting with us for their first time.

Greg Gunn set the pace in F class by shooting early at the 1st 300 yard match, getting up with a score of 59.5 out of 60. Daniel Sandford then carded a 59.7 and the game was on. Ray Broadbent wasn’t far behind scoring a 56.  Wendy, in her first shoot shot well to score a 48, one supercentre behind Craig Steel on 48.1.

Xmas Shoot 2012

The club held its annual xmas shoot this weekend. 9 members fronted up at 10am for an informal shoot at 300 yards using a variety of rifles ranging from a Canadian version of a ParkerHale .308 scope equipped rifle to some .303 range rifles with target sights and a .303 with standard battle sights. Ben Andrews top scored with a 50.5 showing the advantages of being able to clearly see the target.

Following a BBQ, the field increased to 16 for the afternoons rifle shoot which was 10 scoring shots at 300 yards at a pig target (ham for Xmas). Scores were fairly tight with most shooters carding above 90 out of 100. 1st was Daniel Sandford with 100.4, 2nd Grant Hornell and Rob Kelly both on 98.6, 3rd Arnold Kelly 98.4.

A 10 target clay shoot was then held. In one of the closest fought competitions of the last few months, shooters battled it out over 300 and 400 yards in tough conditions.  The very cold wind blowing in the faces of the competitors would rapidly pickup or drop off just enough to take a shot out of the super centre and into the 5 ring.

In F Class (scoped rifles) Rob Kelly shot very well at 300 yards to score a 56.4, ahead of Arnold Kelly on 55.4 and Danny Sandford on 54.4, with a number of other shooters not far behind all with scores of 50 or better.

Target Rifle saw Ken Pickett shooting a 47.4 to take the lead from Steve Ludwig.

400 yards and the conditions hadn?t improved but most shooters were starting to get a feel for it.  Ken Pickett in Target Rifle dropped a few points but maintained his lead from Steve Ludwig who had picked up 6 points.

F Class was where the pressure was on, Michael Davies and Arnold Kelly both shot first, unfortunately Michael put in a couple of 4s which put him out of contention, however, Arnold Kelly managed to pickup a point scoring a 56.3. Danny Sandford shot a 57.3 to take the range prize.  Which left Rob Kelly needing a 55.4 to win, with the pressure on Rob shot well but finished up on 55.1.

Aggregate placings were very tight, with Danny Sandford easing out Arnold Kelly on a countback, both scoring 111.7, with Rob Kelly 3rd on 111.5.  New member Trevor Pollard finished 4th on 107.3.

Handicap winner was Rob Kelly.

This week?s competition was open to Target Rifle, F Class Standard & F Class Open, the match consisted of 10 scoring shot at 500 yards and 10 at 700 yards. Conditions could only be discribed as very difficult, the mirage made getting a clear sight picture almost impossible and the wind blew quite strongly at times but would then drop right off, leaving the wind flags hanging down their poles, only to pick up again but sometimes from a different direction.  Scores suffered accordingly.

Top scores in each class went to Bernie Warren (target rifle) 45.2 & 44 for an aggregate of 89, Matt Sandford (F Class open) 50 & 43 for a total of 93 and Danny Sandford (F Class standard) 54.2 & 57.4 for a total of 111.6.

The MCSI (mixed catergory score index) was then used to calculate the overall winner.  Danny Sandford finished on a score of 159 ahead of Bernie Warren 148 and Matt Sandford 130.

Handicap winner was Danny Sandford on 117.4

Next week, starting at 1pm is Round 2 of the Feral Animal competition consisting of two 10 shot matches at 100 yards followed at 3pm by a long range match consisting of two 10 shot matches at 8/9 or 1000 yards.

This week saw a working bee held at 10am, during which members cleaned out the target shed, repaired flag poles and performed maintenance work on the butts, a BBQ lunch followed then everyone got down to the real reason we go there.  Conditions were mild with a fairly strong breeze coming from about 11 o?clock and the occassional shower.

The program for the day was two 10 shot matches at 300 & 400 yards.

It was good to see Matt Sandford return after a break of a couple of months and he proved he hadn?t forgotten anything by shooting first at 300 yards and putting the pressure on with a 57 with 4 supercentres in F Class.  Unfortunately though this was only sufficient to give him 2nd place as final scores for the 300 yards range came in. Danny Sandford 1st on 60.8, Matt Sandford 2nd on 57.4 and Arnold Kelly 3rd on 50.1.

At 400 yards, conditions deteriorated as did some scores, however positions remained unchanged from the first range with the same 3 shooters still holding onto the first 3 places. Danny Sandford was 1st on 57.5, Matt Sandford 2nd on 54.4 and Arnold Kelly 3rd on 52.3.

Aggregate scores in F Class were Danny Sandford 117.13, Matt Sandford 111.8 and Arnold Kelly 102.4.

As a lead up to interclub team shoots later in the year, Hamilton Rifle Club held a coached fullbore shoot at 600 & 700 yards.  In fullbore shooting competitors shoot using a sling for support and peep sights, the role of the coach is to read the wind and tell the shooter what sight adjustments to make, whilst the role of the shooter is to fully concentrate on firing as near to perfectly as possible.  With a fairly strong wind blowing from the right coaches were kept busy with sight settings of between 5 to 8 moa required.

At 600 yards Arnold Kelly held on to 1st place on 46.3 ahead of Bernie Warren on 45.2 and Ken Pickett 3rd on 44.1, with the rest of the field trailing behind.

At 700 yards, Danny Sandford shot a 44.3 to be in 1st place ahead of Bernie Warren on 44.1 and Ken Pickett taking 3rd on a countback from Arnold Kelly both on 42.1

Hamilton Rifle Club Weekly Results

Hamilton Rifle Club hosted its first Feral Animal Target Competition for 2012 followed by two 10 shot matches at 500 yards. During the Feral Animal Comp there was a light breeze blowing from the righthand side of the range, however by the time the 500 yard match had started, the wind had changed and was blowing from the left and increased in strength as the shoot progressed. The temperature was very unpleasant especially when lying on the ground to shoot, with the radiated heat from the scorched ground proving too much for some.

In the Feral Animal match held at 200 yards, Arnold Kelly again proved his dominance in this discipline taking 1st place with a 99 out of 100, followed by Grant Hornell 2nd with a 92 and Ray Broadbent 3rd with a 79.

At 500 yards, Danny Sandford, using his new rifle in it?s 1st match, set the pace with a 60 out of 60, followed by Grant Hornell on 56 and Bernie Warren on 54.

In the 2nd match at 500 yards, with the heat, humidity and wind increasing, scores dropped a bit as did shooters.  Danny Sandford dropped 4 points to get up with a 56 for an aggregate of 116, with Grant Hornell scoring a 47 for an aggregate of 103.

Next week?s shoot consists of two 10 shot matches at 600 & 700 yards, using peep sights and a coach.  Enquiries phone Danny Sandford on 0427 712602 or visit our website www.hamiltonrifleclub.com

This week members came together for the 1st competition for 2012. The program consisted of 2 ten shot matches at a 10 ring target over 200 & 300 yards using scoped rifles. The bullseye is just under 2 inches in diameter, so while not too difficult at 200 yards, things get a bit harder at 300 yards especially with a cool south-easterly breeze and a bit of mirage thrown in for good measure.

At 200 yards Ray Broadbent shot first and set the pace with a 92, which was sufficient to put him ahead of Ben Andrews on 90 but behind Arnold Kelly on 94 and Danny Sandford on 98.

As could be expected at 300 yards most shooters scores were lower except for Bernie Warren who picked up 5 points and Arnold Kelly 1 point. Positions remained the same as 200 yards with Danny Sandford still in the lead with a 97, Arnold Kelly 2nd with a 95 and Ray Broadbent 3rd on 86.

Aggregate places therefor were 1st Danny Sandford 195, 2nd Arnold Kelly 189 and 3rd Ray Broadbent 178.

It was good to see two new shooters, James Dehnert and Alan Rees competing.

Next week?s shoot is a long range match of 10 shots at 800, 900 & 1000 yards (subject to weather conditions) starting at 1pm.Enq contact Danny Sandford on 0427 712602.

This week the Rifle Club held its annual xmas shoot consisting of 10 scoring shots at 300 yards on a snap & rapid target.  This is a small target on the end of a stick that is held up for a few seconds at a time anywhere in an area about 10? wide. Hits in the 6? bullseye were scored as a 10, anything else as zero.  Conditions were very windy which made holding the target up and still difficult, it was also difficult for the shooter who had very little time to adjust for the changing conditions.  Some good groups were shot, with a number of shooters getting all hits on the target, unfortunately for many, a lot of hits were outside the bullseye and didn?t count.

Arnold Kelly did well to score a 60, ahead of Brad Broadbent, Danny Sandford and Bruce Addinsall all tying for 2nd.

It has been said that rifle shooters don?t make good shotgunners, and most proved this to be correct at a 10 target clay shoot.  Arnold Kelly shot well to achieve 10 out 10, with Ray Broadbent only missing 1 clay, tied for 3rd were Brad Broadbent and Matt Sandford with 7 each.

Final positions were Arnold Kelly 1st on 160, Ray & Brad Broadbent 2nd on 110 and Bruce Addinsall 3rd on 90.

Presentations of Annual Trophies followed with Bernie Warren being declared the Fullbore Champion for 2011 and Danny Sandford the F Class Champion.  Arnold Kelly was declared the Feral Champion having taken 1st place at both feral target shoots for the year and Danny Sandford the winner of the short range scoped rifle shoots with 4 out of 4 wins.

Our xmas dinner was held at the Botanical Motel, the meal was 1st class as was was the service and company.

It was with great pleasure that Life Membership was presented to our Secretary of many years Bernie Warren for his outstanding service and dedication to the Hamilton Rifle Club.

The club first shoot for 2012 will be on Saturday the 7th January.  Enq phone Danny Sandford on 0427712602.

Members celebrated 100 years of the Hamilton Rifle Range being in its present location by visiting the site of old range at Mt Baimbridge which closed in 1910, this was followed by a BBQ lunch and a double 300 yard shoot. Conditions were very good at times with just a light breeze which tendered to pick up at times and catch shooters unaware.

In F Class, Arnold Kelly set the pace early by shooting a fantastic 60.3 (which meant all of his 10 shots were within a 2.6 inch cental bullseye) at the first range, followed by Danny Sandford on 56.1 and Ken Pickett 3rd on 56.

At the second range, Arnold Kelly faltered and shot a 56.2, which left the gate open for Danny Sandford and Ken Pickett if they were good enough to shoot 60s, all other shooters were out of contention.  Danny Sandford took the challenge, saved his sighters and shot 9 centres in a row before loosing his last shot to the wind and finishing on 59.1, Ken Pickett started well but it was not to be his day getting up with 53.3.  Second range placings were Danny Sandford 1st on 59.1, Bruce Addinsall 2nd on 57.2 and Arnold Kelly 3rd on 56.2.

Aggregate placings were Arnold Kelly 1st on 116.5, Danny Sandford 2nd 115.2 and 3rd Bruce Addinsall 110.3

Unfortunately numbers were down in Target Rifle, but Bernie Warren shot well to take the aggregate with 94.9.

Handicap winner was Bruce Addinsall.

Next week is our Xmas Shoot, comprising of a 10 shot 300 yard snap & rapid target followed by a clay target shoot.  Please remember to bring a $10 gift for the Kris Kringle.  Xmas Dinner will be at the Botanical at 7pm. Bookings essential.

For about the 4th week in row, shooters were greeted with a fishtailing frontal wind, if the wind was kind to you then some good scores were shot, but get a bad patch and scores would tumble.  The target this week was a feral cat image with the 10 ring in the head and chest area. The shoot commenced with 2 sighters and 10 scoring shots at 200 yards and then progressed to 2 sighters and 10 scoring shots at 300 yards.  All shooters were using scoped rifles.

At the first range Arnold Kelly only dropped one point to take the lead with 99 followed by Daniel Sandford 2nd with a 97 on a countback from Ken Pickett 3rd on 97.

300 yards saw Rob Kelly shoot well to get up with a 98, followed by Daniel Sandford on 93 and Ray Broadbent 3rd on 92, beating Arnold Kelly 4th on a countback.

Aggregate positions were Arnold Kelly 1st on 191, Daniel Sandford 2nd on 190 and Rob Kelly 3rd .

The Kelly family recently decided to donate a  trophy for the annual champion of our feral animal shoots in memory of the late Mr Les Kelly, a life member of the Hamilton Rifle Club.  With 2 feral animal competitions held this year and with Arnold Kelly taking 1st place at both shoots, it seems very fitting for his name to be the first one on the trophy.

Next week members & friends are invited to meet at 10.30am at the Mt Baimbridge Lookout Carpark, we will then visit the old rifle range at Mt Baimbridge which closed in 1910. Followed by a BYO BBQ at HRC and two 10 shot matches at 300 yards to commemorate 100 years of the current rifle range.  Ph Daniel Sandford on 0427712602 or visit http://www.hamiltonrifleclub.com/

Competitors were faced with trying conditions at this weeks 400 yard match, the wind which had been blowing steadily from the right when shooters arrived, starting to blow straight down the range, fishtailing to the left & right, then later in the day swung back to 2 o?clock . The central bullseye is 3.4 inches and the super V 1.7 inches, so shooters really had to watch the flags and also hope for a bit of luck on their side.

In the 1st match, Bernie Warren led the way in Target Rifle Class with a 46.4, followed closely by Ken Pickett on 45.2, ahead of Grant Hornell 3rd with 31.

F Class (scoped rifles) saw Steve Ludwig in 3rd place on 34, behind Ray Broadbent on 44 and Daniel Sandford on 54.1.

Positions changed slightly in the 2nd match with Steve Ludwig shooting a 45 to push Ray Broadbent back to 3rd on 43, with Daniel Sandford taking 1st again with a 56.3.

In Target Rifle, Bernie Warren shot a 47.2 to hold on to 1st ahead of Ken Pickett on 44 and Grant Hornell 38.

Target Rifle Aggregate winner was Bernie Warren on 93.6, with F Class Aggregate winner being Daniel Sandford on 110.4.  Handicap winner was also Daniel Sandford.

Next week?s shoot is a fox target at 200 yards consisting of two 10 shot matches. Enq ph Daniel Sandford on 0427 712602.  Other information can be found at our website http://www.hamiltonrifleclub.com/

This week?s shoot consisted of two 10 shot matches at 900 yards, open to F Class & Target Rifle (peep sights). Conditions were overcast with low light on the targets, wind was at times variable, changing from a 1 or 2 vernier right wind to a zero wind or a 3 vernier left wind.  1 vernier (moa) is equal to 9 inches at 900 yards and with the central bulleye or 6 ring being 10 inches in diameter there was not much room for error.

Steve Ludwig shot well in F class (scoped rifles) at the first range scoring a 53.1, taking 1st place on a countback from Arnold Kelly also on 53.1, 3rd was Danny Sandford on 50.1.  In Target Rifle, Bernie Warren only dropped one point to get up with a score of 49.1.

In the second match conditions continued to change as did the shooting positions. Grant Hornell improved dramatically on his previous score and secured 1st place with a 56.4, ahead of Danny Sandford on 56.2 and Arnold Kelly 3rd on 53.1.  Bernie Warren in Target Rifle improved on his previous very good score by shooting a possible of 50.3.

Aggregate placings in F Class were Danny Sandford 1st on 106.3, just beating Arnold Kelly by 1 super centre on 106.2 and 3rd went to Steve Ludwig on 103.1. In Target Rifle, Bernie Warrens score of 99.4 (out of 100) saw him secure a firm  scratch win as well as taking out the handicap .

Next week?s shoot will be two 10 shot matches at 400 yards starting at 1pm.  Enq ph Danny Sandford on 0427 712602.  A new shooting calender has been confirmed for the 1st 6 months of 2012, copies are available from http://www.hamiltonrifleclub.com/ or at the range.

This week?s shoot consisted of two 10 shot matches at 800 and 900 yards.  With the wind flags all blowing in different directions it made shooting difficult, at times wind shifts varied from 4 to 5 minutes right wind to 3 left wind and it was hard to pick one flag that was actually showing this. However, as usual someone seems to pick it right and show up all the other shooters and this time it was Matt Sandford?s turn.

Matt nailed it at 800 yards and shot a brilliant 57.2, only dropping 3 points in his last three shots as the wind changed.

Back at 900 yards, conditions deteriorated as did the scores but Matt Sandford was still able to take 1st place with a 48.2 comfortably ahead of the rest of the field.  Finishing on a aggregate score of 105.4 gave him 1st place as well as the 1st on handicap.

Next week?s competition is a double 300 yard shoot open to both scoped rifles and peep sights starting at 1pm.  Enq phone Danny Sandford on 0427 712602.  http://www.hamiltonrifleclub.com/

This week?s shoot consisted of two 10 shot matches at 300 yards, conditions were cold and wet with the Hamilton wind machine turning on a strong frontal fish tailing wind. Most competitors were F Class(scoped rifle) with Bernie Warren being the only Target Rifle(peep sight) shooter.

Scores in F Class were close throughout the shoot, Daniel Sandford on 56.2 lead the way in the first match followed by Arnold Kelly 55.3, and Matt Sandford 53.2 just ahead of Ken Pickett on 52.2.

In the 2nd match, Arnold Kelly shot well but put a 4 in for his last shot dropping his score down to 55.1 and 3rd place on a countback from Grant Hornell 2nd on 55.1(finishing with a super centre) and Daniel Sandford 1st on 57.2.  Matt Sandford and Ken Pickett tussled it out for 4th place with Matt with a 51.2  narrowly pushing out Ken on 50.3.

This week?s shoot consisted of two 10 shot matches fired over 600 & 700 yards both F class (scoped rifles) and Target Rifle (peep sights) competitors were catered for.

There was a light breeze blowing from the left hand side of the range which quietly varied in strength and a fair bit of mirage to help make sighting harder.

At 600 yards, shooters started to realise that this was not going to be any easy shoot as they got up from the mound with some fairly average scores.  In Target Rifle, Bernie Warren led the way with a 48.5 (out of a possible 50.10) whilst Danny Sandford held 1st place in F Class on 55.4 (out of a possible 60.10) .

At 700 yards, shooters should have been getting the better of the conditions but this was not to be.  In F Class Steve Ludwig shot well to get up with a score of 52.2 but failed to catch Danny Sandford on 56.2.  Bernie Warren again shot well in Target Rifle to record the second range win.

Aggregate  Scores saw Bernie Warren taking out the Target Rifle section with a 92.6 and Danny Sandford successful in F Class with 111.6.

Handicap winner was Steve Ludwig.

Next week?s shoot consists of two 10 shot, short range matches at 300 yards commencing at 1pm.  Enq ph Danny Sandford on 0427 712602.  Also check our web site at http://www.hamiltonrifleclub.com/

This week?s competition was a 200 yard scoped rifle event consisting of two 10 shot matches at a 10 ring target.  Conditions were wet, windy and cold, and did I say wet. Gumboots or waders should have been the order of the day. It was a day for the very keen dedicated rifle shooter or just the plain mad.  A number of calibres were used including 22/250, 6mm Rem and .308 Winchester.

In the first match, Danny Sandford took 1st place with 97.3 (out of 100), 2nd was George Bourne 93.1 and 3rd was Matt Sandford 83.

This week members visited the Portland Rifle Club and competed in a 200 yard fly shoot.  The bulleye or 10 ring is less than 1 inch in diameter or about the same size as one of our standard stick on patches.  Two ten shot matches were fired for a possible of 200.  Due to the blustery and wet conditions the shooters were treated to the comfort of firing from a covered firing line. However for those lucky enough to take a stint at marking it was very bleak with the wind making it difficult to raise and lower the target.

At the first range Matt Sandford and Portland member Dave Molloy tied for 4th place with 63 each, 3rd was Glen Holmberg (PRC) on 76, 2nd Danny Sandford on 87 and in 1st place Roger Teal of Portland on 88.

Positions remained the same at the 2nd range except for Dave Molloy breaking his tie with Matt Sandford by shooting a 74 compared to Matt?s 66.  Glen Holmberg shot a very nice 91 in 3rd place behind Danny Sandford on 93 and Roger Teal 96.

Aggregate scores were 1st Roger Teal 184, 2nd Danny Sandford 180, 3rd Glen Holmberg 167, 4th Dave Molloy 134 and 5th Matt Sandford 129.

Bernie Warren was the only member shooting Target Rifle Class, having given up the comfort of his lounge chair and his beloved magpies.  On a very small bulleye target he shot exceptionally well to record a score of 47.4 & 47.3 for 94.7 out of a possible 100.

Next week is a F Class match (scoped rifles) at Hamilton starting at 1pm consisting of two 10 shot matches at 300 yards.  Enq phone Danny Sandford on 0427 712602

Hamilton Rifle Club

Weekly Results 13/8/11

Hamilton Rifle Club members returned to the Hamilton Rifle Range after having shot at the Dunkeld Rifle Range for the past 6 weeks,  conditions were still very wet underfoot but shooting commenced at 1pm with two ten shots matches at 600 yards. The wind was light but subject to dropping off suddenly and changing direction. The mirage tended to reflect this better than the wind flags.

In Target Rifle Class the main battle was between Bernie Warren and Ken Picket, with Ken narrowly taking the 1st range with a 46.2 to Bernie?s 45.1 and then Bernie reversing this at the next range to score a very good 49.6 to Ken?s 47.5.  Final scores were close with Bernie sneaking home with 94.7 to Ken with 93.7.

F Class saw Danny Sandford record a 55.4 & 56.4 for an aggregate of 111.8 and 1st place, whilst Grant Hornell and his son Adam fought it out for 2nd & 3rd.  Grant scored a 39.1 & 48.3 for a agg of 87.4 beating Adam by 2 super centres on 41.1 & 46.1 for an agg of 87.2

Mention should also be made of new shooter Jamie Walker who recorded a respectable score of 21 using an old open sighted .303 rifle and then using Danny?s rifle shot a 56.2.

Next week is the Doug Kerr Trophy comprising two 10 shot matches at 300 & 900 yards.  Doug Kerr was a long time member of the Club, with these being his favourite distances. Doug was a Corporal in the North Australia Observation Unit during World War 2 , the 500 strong unit patrolling an area from the Kimberleys to the Gulf of Carpentaria, living off the land in very remote and hostile country.  The shoot commences at 1pm.  The trophy is for Target Rifle (fullbore) only, however F Class (scopes) are welcome to compete.

Congratulations to Bernie Warren

The No 13 District Rifle Association held it Fullbore Champions of Champions Match at Dunkeld this Saturday, with Bernie Warren representing Hamilton Rifle Club.  Alisatair Row was the Casterton RC Champion and Gary Keith the Ararat Champion.

The championship consisted of four 10 shot matches fired at 300, 600, 700 & 900 yards.

Bernie Warren demonstrated his excellent skills and determination to win the championship with a very impressive score of 198.20 out of 200.40, only dropping 2 shots outside the bullseye for the whole competition.

                                                   G. Keith came 2nd with 188 and A. Row 3rd with 186.

Bernie is now entitled to represent the No 13 DRA at the State Champions of Champions to be held at Bendigo in September.

After lunch, HRC members held a social shoot at 900 yards with Bernie Warren again proving that age is no barrier in rifle shooting when he shot beautifully to record a score of 49.9, a fantastic run of 9 centre bulls out of a possible 10.

HRC will shoot at the Hamilton Rifle Club next weekend with two 10 shot matches at 600 yards, commencing at 1pm.  Due to the continuing wet condition of the track access past the 600 yard line will be restricted.  Enq ph Danny Sandford on 0427 712 602
